Biography

Willie John MacAulay was born and raised in Grosebay in 1948 and was a well-known Gaelic singer and recording artist. He won a Gold Medal at the National Mod in East Kilbride in 1975 and recorded seven albums in total. His singing performances were much in demand both at home and abroad, and he once performed at the Sydney Opera House to an audience of 25,000 people. There are 13 recordings of him on our website, some of which were recorded by the School of Scottish Studies in 1971. The remainder were recorded by the BBC between 1975 and 2001 for radio programmes such as ‘Fàilte air a’ Bhaile’ and ‘Prògram Choinnich’. Willie John died in 2006.
