Summary - In this humorous ballad, a farmer readily consents to yield his wife to the Devil, who carries her away on his back. When they arrive at Hell however, the wife proves to be more than a handful; the Devil's minions plead him to take her back and he is forced to return her to the farmer.
Jean Ritchie explains that there are many Scottish and Irish versions of this song, but that this particular version is from Kentucky.
