He ventures that a happier pair are not to be found, and blesses the happy day he met her.

Robert Ford in 'Vagabond Songs and Ballads' (1899) states that "no fewer than four versions ... are well known - one by Colonel James Ramsay of Stirling Castle; one by Lady Nairne; one- 'Kate o' Gowrie' - by William Reid of Glasgow," plus the one he includes, "by an unknown hand".
