In more complete versions of this song, additional verses tell of the reason for Willie's drowning, the young woman's foreboding dream and her subsequent search, her retrieval of Willie's body using her hair, and her death through grief (all very similar in plot to Child 214 'The Dowie Dens o Yarrow').
