Geàrr-chunntas - A cock's crow protected a croft house; when it was given away the house was destroyed.

Tom Robertson heard the following story from his father.

There was a croft house on the hillside and one day a smack came into the voe and the crew came ashore. They asked for a hen to eat and the old man gave them an old cock that was keeping the household from sleeping. But the old man didn't know that on the two previous nights, about one in the morning, a light had come over the hill and down to the dykes. When it got there the cock crowed and the light disappeared. Now that there was no cock to crow, the light came over the dyke and down to the house. Next morning the house was burned to cinders.
