Summary
Anecdote about a girl amusing the Prince of Wales by her vigorous dancing at a gillies' ball.
A young woman, a relation of the contributor's mother, was invited to the gillies' ball at Balmoral, which was held at the back end of the year [i.e. after the harvest]. The dances were mostly Highland schottisches, quadrilles and reels. Col. Phipps, a friend of the Prince of Wales, was swinging the ladies nearly off their feet and was very pleased with himself. This young woman thought if she could get opposite Phipps in a dance she would give him a scare. When she got opposite him in a Reel of Tulloch she deliberately did not change hands at the right time and Phipps was sent flying, as she was much stronger than he was. The Prince of Wales was in fits of laughter at this.
