Summary
Anecdote about a telephone call to a wrong number and the difficulty of making out English accents.
John Strachan was sitting at home one night with a book when he got a phone call. He could not make out whom the operator was asking for, and asked whether she had been educated at Oxford or Cambridge, where people were known not to speak well. The operator transferred the call to London. The London operator thought she was speaking to the Royal Hotel, Thurso 29, whereas she was speaking to a farm at Fyvie 29. However Mr Strachan and the operator could make each other out without difficulty and had a conversation about the hotel.
