Summary
Tobermory history.
Tobermory was set up as a seaport by the British Fisheries Society in the early 19th century, but it never flourished as much as expected. Being on an island was a disadvantage, especially when the railway to Oban and Mallaig was built. It has a very good harbour. An old man told the contributor he had seen as many as 95 sailing boats in the harbour at the same time. He remembers seeing three-masted schooners himself.
