Summary

This waulking song has four sections. The chorus lines differ in each section. The first begins: "I am unhappy / My lover has departed / On a full-masted ship / She came to land in Harris."

The second part tells how the composer is returning to Kintail.

The third part is addressed to a woman described as being beneath contempt, and in the final part the composer says: "May I not wear the kerchief [of a married woman] / If I do not love the hunter of the deer."
