Summary

The expressiveness of Scots for writing poetry.

In the opinion of Tom Todd (T. T. Kilbucho), once people went to secondary school they lost contact with their native area and people, and began speaking a sort of English. This happened to him when he went to Biggar High School. He had intended to go on to study law, but was advised to go back to the farm for the sake of his sight. The dialect of his poems is the true Peebleshire speech used every day by the herds, ploughmen, and farmers. It is far more expressive than English, though he has written some poems in English.
