Summary
The beggarman asks for lodging and entices the daughter of the house to go with him. Her mother rises and, finding the beggar gone, thinks he has stolen something, but he has not. She sends a servant to waken her daughter, but she is missing. She is angry, but the two are away to the hills, where the girl says she will learn the begging trade. Five years later the beggar returns to the farm and the old woman says she will not tolerate beggars as one stole her daughter and she would give gold and silver to see her again. He points to Jane coming towards them with two children and another on the way.
Preceded by introduction. The contributor learned the song from his father.
