Summary
Food in the old days.
In the old days there was plenty of white fish and herring. Potatoes were usually plentiful, along with oatmeal. The beginning of spring was a time of scarcity. The Highland cattle would go dry until they calved at the beginning of Summer. Food in the contributor's father's time consisted mainly of sowens, barley bread and porridge. They collected shellfish such as limpets, razorfish, oysters and cockles. They made soup from the juices of cooked fish and shellfish, thickening it sometimes with flour. They also made "fish-heads stuffed with burgoo" which was eaten with the fish. Potatoes were mashed, and heated on the griddle the following morning.
