Summary
Harvest customs in Perthshire.
The last sheaf of harvest was called the maighdeann. If it was a late harvest, the last sheaf was called the Cailleach. It was dressed like a woman and sewed onto cardboard to keep its shape. It was kept above the fire. The Cailleach was dressed in drab clothes.
When horses went out for the first ploughing the following year, they were given corn from the last sheaf. The contributor heard it was an Austrian custom. This is still done. The last sheaf was not cut by a particular person, but it was a lucky thing to do.
