Summary
In this ballad, Jeannie of Bethelnie falls in love with Lord John Glenlogie. She tells him she loves him but he says her dowry is too small. She becomes ill and her father's clerk writes to Glenlogie. Conscience-stricken, he rides back to Bethelnie.
Mr Strachan had farmed Bethelnie, and his brother had it after him. He admired the Gordon family, including Lord Aberdeen. They were out in the '45. Mr Strachan asserts that a Gordon was a sweetheart of Mary, Queen of Scots.
