Summary

In this waulking song the bard wishes she was in Uist, where her son is.

Item Notes

Text transcribed in the School of Scottish Studies. 6 couplets sung.

This waulking song has an unusual story. According to oral tradition, Clanranald's daughter was banished to the island of Coll, leaving her child in Uist. Various reasons are given for the girl's banishment. Years later, Clanranald came in his galley to visit the Laird of Coll, and the girl was asked to sing to entertain the guests. Her brother failed to recognise her, and fell in love with her. When the visitors finally realised who she was, she returned with them to Uist.
