Summary

An encounter with poachers.

A lad was returning to Nochty [Glen Nochty] after visiting his mother and was coming down a steep sheuch [defile] in the dark. There was black fishing [poaching] going on in those days, and he saw a light shining on two faces over the flat. They tackled him, and as he used to say, "I can tell you they werena idle." They beat him and threw him in the water, and continued fishing. The lad who got the beating was said to be MacBain [later a gauger, i.e. exciseman].

Item Notes

'Sheuch' usually means a ditch or trench, but here seems to be used
to mean a defile. It may be a mistake for 'heuch', a bank
overhanging a river. MacBain also figures in the previous track on the same tape (SA1955.67).
