Excursion to Portobello from Peebles the day after the Beltane Fair; other annual trips.
In David Lawson's youth, the Beltane Fair was confined to the Friday, with the riding of the marches and the crowning of the Beltane Queen all done on that day. The day after there was a trip to the seaside at Portobello, which was subsidised by the mills. The special constable used to organise a big trip in August, which went to such places as Ayr, Aberdeen, Helensburgh or Rothesay. The Sunday School trip only went short distances, in hay-carts, and the horses wore their best brasses and polished harness.
