Summary

The 19th century hand-operated fire engine in Peebles was replaced by a steam engine.

The hand-operated fire engine that lay under the Tweed bridge in Peebles was replaced by a steam engine in David Lawson's youth. This new engine was a beautiful machine, with polished brass-work. It used to be the last item in the Beltane procession. Water for the fire engine was drawn from the Tweed or the Cuddy [Edderston Water], not from the mains. The fire brigade was composed of all kinds of people.
