Summary

How the fox got the better of the foxhunter.

There was a foxhunter who used to hang the corpses of every fox he killed in his kitchen. He lived in an old house, in which he kept a cow. One night he counted the carcasses, when he noticed that there was one more than there should be. He realised that there was a live fox among them pretending to be dead.

He shut the door and shouted for his dogs, but there was no sign of them. He got a big stick and the fox ran under the cow. Every time the foxhunter tried to hit the fox, he hit the cow instead. Eventually, the cow was killed

The fox took a mouthful of straw, set it on fire, and ran under the bed. The bed went on fire and the fox escaped when the foxhunter went to put it out.

Calum MacIllEathain: Seo ma-thà, bha sibh ag ràdh gun robh brocair an siud uair?

Aonghas MacIllFhialain: Bha brocair an siud a bh' aig duine-uasal, agus bha taigh aige a-muigh anns a' mhonadh, agus a h-uile madadh-ruadh a bhiodh e a' marbhadh, bha e ga chrochadh, a-staigh anns an taigh anns a' chidsin. Agus 's e seann taigh fada a bh' ann agus bha aona mhart aige ga cumail. Bhiodh am mart a-staigh aige.

Ach thàinig e dhachaigh an oidhche a bha seo, 's thog e teine, 's bha e a' coimhead air na madaidhean-ruadha 's iad crochte aige thall. Ach thug e an aire gun robh fear a bharrachd ann, agus thòisich e air an cunntais. Bha fear a bharrachd ann air na bha còir aige air a bhith ann.

Ach smaointich e an seo air innleachdan a' mhadaidh-ruaidh, gum faodadh fear tighinn a-staigh, nuair a bha esan air falbh. Agus dh'èirich e agus dhùin e an doras. Cha robh na coin a-staigh idir. Thòisich e air èigheach air na coin 's cha robh sgeul aige air na coin. Fhuair e maide, 's a Dhia, thuig am madadh-ruadh gun robh e ann an droch thrap. Leig e às a' ghrèim agus sìos a ghabh e fo amhach na bà. Dh'fhalbh esan sìos às a dhèidh le maide agus a h-uile turas a dh'fheuchadh e ris am madadh-ruadh a bhualadh, 's e a' bhò a gheibheadh a' bhuille 's cha b' e am madadh-ruadh. Leumadh am madadh-ruadh 's bheireadh e air a' cheangal aice na bheul, agus tharraingeadh esan am maide gus a bhualadh, agus leigeadh am madadh-ruadh às a' ghrèim, agus bha e a-staigh fo chorp na bà, agus gheibheadh a' bhò a' bhuille. Mu dheireadh, gus an do mharbh e a' bhò. Agus cha robh cù a' tighinn. Ah, thuirt e ris fhèin ach gun geàrdadh e an doras air co-dhiù gus an tigeadh na coin, ged a mharbh e a' bhò fhèin.

Nuair a chunnaic am madadh-ruadh mar a bha, dh'fhalbh e agus ghabh e suas, agus 's e fodar a bh' aige anns an leabaidh agus thug e a-nuas làn a bheòil dhen fhodar agus chuir e ris an teine e, agus suas a ghabh e fon leabaidh leis an teine. Thòisich an leaba air a dhol na teine. Dh'fhalbh esan a chur às na leapa mun rachadh an taigh na theine 's siud a-mach am madadh-ruadh, agus thug e an cnoc air, agus chaill e an dèidh a h-uile rud. Agus siud mar a dh'èirich do thriocachan a' mhadaidh-ruaidh.
