Summary

George Buchanan and the Devil.

Nobody could ever trick George Buchanan. Once, he was with a group who were practising the black arts. They met in a house, and the last night that they met, the Devil was to take the last person to leave the house. They drew lots and George agreed, for payment, to swap places with the man who had been chosen.

George asked the others to leave on the light when they left the room. When the Devil came, he said, "You're my man." However, George pointed at his shadow and said, "That's your man." The Devil leapt towards the shadow and George escaped out of the door. He never had a shadow after that.

Aonghas MacIllFhialain: Bha Seòras Bochanan, cha tug duine riamh a char às, agus an triop a bha seo, bha e còmhla ri feadhainn a bha ag obair air sgoil-dhuibh. Bhiodh iad a' cruinneachadh còmhla ann an taigh agus meeting aca a h-uile h-oidhche. Agus an oidhche bho dheireadh a bha iad gus a bhith ann, bha an duine a bhiodh air deireadh, bha an Deamhan gus a thoir leis. Agus 's ann a chuir iad cruinn feuch cò dh'fhuiricheadh air deireadh aca, agus am fear air an tàinig an crann, cha robh fhios aige dè rud a dhèanadh e, ach thuirt Seòras ris, nam pàigheadh e esan gu math, gum fanadh e na àite. Thuirt e gun dèanadh e siud; rud sam bith a dh'iarradh e, bheireadh e dha nam fanadh e na àite.

"Uill, ma-thà," arsa Seòras, "fanaidh mise nad àite," ars esan, "agus nuair a bhios sibh a' falbh," ars esan, "fàgaidh sibh an solas laiste," ars esan.

'S ann mar seo a bha. Nuair a bha iad a' falbh, dh'fhàgadh an solas laiste, agus bha Seòras air deireadh agus, nuair a bha e anns an doras, dh'fhairich e a bhith a' breith air air a chùlaibh:

"'S tusa mo dhuine-sa," ars esan.

Thionndaidh Seòras:

"Ah, cha mhi," arsa Seòras. "Siud do dhuine," ars esan, 's fhaileas fhèin thall ris a' bhalla.

Leum an donas gu fhaileas, 's fhuair Seòras a-mach, 's chan fhaca Seòras fhaileas riamh tuilleadh.

Agus sin mar a thug e a char às an Droch Spiorad.
