Summary

Recited fragments of a song:

I left Kinellar's bonnie braes,
Ah likit them weel aneuch,
And I fee'd tae a greedy carl
That bides in the Guise o Tough.

Ah hadna been there a day but only three,
When the table there was rather bare,
Twas not the thing for me.

The brose was thick the [?] were thin,
The broth they were but bree,
I chased the barley roond the plate
An a' I catched was three.

Item Notes

3 stanzas; first and last stanzas have 4 lines, the second has only 3 lines.

Although the contributors call this song 'The Guise o Tough', it bears no resemblance to that song (Roud Folk Song Index no. 3800). All stanzas except the first correspond to the bothy song 'Newmill' (or 'Newhills'). Kinellar and Newhills are adjacent parishes in Aberdeenshire.
