Summary
A recited fragment:
At Prestonpans we arranged our clans,
And mony a baby lost its daddy;
Like winds on the sky we made them fly,
Wi every wave o the tartan plaidie.
Item Notes
1 verse of 4 lines recited. This fragment may belong to either of two nearly identical songs known as 'Prince Charlie (and his Tartan Plaidie)' and 'King Fareweel'; the former normally has a chorus beginning "Love, fareweel", while the second begins "King, fareweel".
The song 'O My Bonnie Highland Laddie' (Roud Folk Song Index no. 5778), first printed in Hogg's 'The Jacobite Relics of Scotland' 2nd series (1821, pp. 115-117), is the generally accepted progenitor of 'King Fareweel' (Hamish Henderson in 'Tocher' 34, 1980, p. 243). It appeared in broadside ballad form some time between 1830 and 1860, under the title 'Prince Charlie and his Tartan Pladdie'.
