Summary

Curing barra-chinn.

Children used to get barra-chinn. One of the contributor's daughters had this while they were living in Tiree. A woman put her finger in the girl's mouth three times a week and it cured her. The woman learned the cure from her mother.

Calum MacIllEathain (CM): Dè an t-ainm a bh' air? Barra...?

Peggy MacDonald (PM): Barra-chinn a theireadh iad ris. Bhiodh e a' tighinn air clann. Uill, pàiste sam bith air an tig e, chan fhaic sibh geala-sùil idir aige. Ged a shealladh e, chan eil e a' togail suas gum faic sibh geal na sùil gu h-ìseal idir aige. Uill, thàinig e air caileag leamsa ann an Tiridhe. Bha mise fichead bliadhna an Tiridhe. Bha. Agus cha robh fhios a'm dè bha ceàrr oirre. Bha i a' falbh mar gum biodh i ann an caitheamh dìreach. Agus thàinig tè a mhuinntir Leòdhais dhan taigh againn, agus thuirt i rium:

"Ò Dhia, dè th' air a' chaileig?" ars ise.

"Chan eil fhios a'm o Dhia," arsa mi fhèin. "An darna h-uair tha i nas fheàrr, 's chuir mi," arsa mi fhìn, "a dh'iarraidh an dotair dhi, 's an rud thug e dhi cha do rinn e [???]."

"Ò," ars ise, "tha barra-chinn agad air an nighean."

Coltach ri jaundice no rud dhen t-seòrsa.

"Ach," ars ise, "tha tè thall an sineach, cuiridh mise a-nall ann an seo i."

Agus thàinig i. Agus rug i air a' phàiste agus chuir i meur na beul. Agus bha an t-eagal oirre nach rachadh aice air a leigheas. Ach co-dhiù:

"Thig mi a-rithist."

Bha trì latha san t-seachdain aice ri tighinn. Chan eil fhios a'm a-nis, an e Diluain agus Diciadain agus Disathairne a bha i a' tighinn. Ach co-dhiù:

"Cha... Na toir," ars ise, "am botal sin tuilleadh dhi," ars ise, "ach dèan," ars ise, "rud beag de bhrochan, on a tha barley agad," ars ise, "'s e as fheàrr."

Agus rinn mi sin. Agus chaidh a' chaileag na b' fheàrr.

"Nach innis sibhse dhòmhsa," arsa mise, "dè an dòigh air an do leigheas sin?"

"An-tà, innsidh," ars ise, "agus 's e bana-cheàrd... 's e mo mhàthair a dh'innis dhomh fhèin e," ars ise, "agus i a' leigheas," ars ise, "balach beag le bana-cheàrd." Agus: "Tha," ars ise, "cnàimh beag," ars ise, "a tha a' tuiteam," ars ise, "a-mach cùl nan cùlag ann a shiud, agus tha agad ri do mheur [???]. Tha agad ri do mheur mheadhan," ars ise, "a chur suas," ars ise, "agus tu bhith cinnteach gum faigh thu air meadhan do mheòir e," ars ise, "agus togail bheag a thoirt da," ars ise, "ann an ainm an Athair 's a Mhic 's an Spioraid Naoimh. Agus mun toir thu a-mach do mheur às a beul," ars ise, "cuir air an taobh eile."

Agus leighis i sin. Nach eil rudan ann a-nist?

CM: Tha gu dearbh, tha gu dearbh. Ò, bhiodh iad ag obair le snàithleachan cuideachd. Tha fhios gun robh an Uibhist nuair a bha sibhse òg, bha boireannaich ann aig am biodh snàithle, a bhiodh a' leigheas a' chronach, a' leigheas nan t-sùil.

PM: Bhitheadh.
