Irish migrant workers in East Lothian in the late 19th century.
Irish workers came across every year for the harvest and for the singling [thinning] of turnips. They lived in a bothy [unmarried farmservants' quarters], consisting of two ends [rooms], one for eating, one for sleeping. They did their own cooking. They got higher wages than the other farmworkers.
