Summary

Loch Maree and how it got its name.

Loch Maree got its name from St Maol Ruanaidh, who came over from Ireland, AD 671. There are many islands on Loch Maree. He built a church on Eilean Màiri. A spring rose up near the cemetery which cured all ailments. It dried up after a shepherd put his dog into it to be cured. St Maol Ruanaidh also built a monastery in Applecross.

Iain MacDhòmhnaill: Tha loch brèagha thall gu tuath ris an abair iad Loch Ma Ruibhe. Agus mar a fhuair i an t-ainm, 's ann dar a thàinig am Maol Ruanaidh, naomh a-nall à Èirinn, anns a' bhliadhna sia ceud agus trì fichead 's a h-aon-deug. Agus thog e eaglais air an eilean, agus 's e Eilean Màiri a their iad ris an eilean. Agus tha mòran eileanan air an loch, agus dar a chaidh a chur a-suas an t-eilean... an eaglais, thàinig tobar... [tha cuideigin a' gearradh a-staigh an seo.]

Thog e eaglais air an eilean agus thog iad taigh manaich anns a' Chomraich. Agus bha mòran meas air anns an àite, agus thàinig tobar dlùth air a' chladh a th' air an eilean agus leighiseadh e sluagh. Cha robh e gu diù gu dè an euslaint a bh' ann. Agus bha cìobair an sin agus chuir e cù ann, agus leighis e an cù. Agus thiormaich an tobar a-suas agus chan aithnich duine cà 'n robh e an-diugh.
