Summary
Boat-building in Barra.
There is no local boat-building in Barra nowadays [1960]. About 100 years previously, large boats known as 'cuthagan' were built in Castlebay. These were sailed to Ireland and Glasgow, where fish were sold and seed purchased. The contributor lists the places where boats stopped on the way home from Glasgow. These boats had a crew of five or six, oars on each side, two sails, and no decks.
Mention of places where the women went during the herring season, including Shetland.
