Summary
A Gaelic proverb with a background story from North Uist, and conversation about the contributor's ancestors.
Cha tig fuachd gus an tig earrach,
no cruaidh-chàs no cruaidh-ghainne,
nuair a dhiùltas bean 's i na h-èiginn,
biadh dha ciad dhuine cloinne.
The contributor tells the background story to this proverb about a woman from Knockintorran who was experiencing such hardship through shortage of food that she had to refuse her firstborn something to eat. This is followed by an explanation of how Knockintorran got its name.
The contributor's great-great-grandmother, Margaret MacDonald, belonged to North Uist. She is also related to the MacKays of Illeray, the family of the North Uist bard Roderick MacKay.
