A fiddler escaped from the trows by tricking them.
A fiddler going to a wedding was captured by the trows [trolls, fairies] and taken to the Thieves Knowe, where he was kept for days. He played to them until they ran short of food. He told them he had a fat animal at home and a jar of fresh butter. If they would come with him, they could go into the byre and pick the animal they wanted and he'd fetch the butter from the house. The trows agreed, but he wakened the people of the house and they rushed out and caught the trows before they could get out with the cow.
Ertie Couper heard the story from his grandfather. The fiddler lived at Collafirth. The Thieves Knowe is up the burn [stream] of Skellater [Skella Dale], above Brae.
