Summary

Andrew Irvine recites his own poem about a local standing stone.

None know how long the standing stone has been there. Some say it was set down by an iceberg; others that it marks a prince's tomb or a site of sun worship. Perhaps, like the working man, it simply fills its niche in nature's plan. It stands outside the hill grind [gate] of Lund, and makes a rubbing stane for röls [young ponies] and a böll [resting place] for sheep and lambs. If it could tell what it has seen, it would speak of funerals, courting, the struggles of the poor and the power of the rich, but wealth cannot buy fame like its own. The stone shows the effects of the weather, but still stands upright, an example to people to fill their given niche, although poor.
