Summary

Fish livers used to calm the sea; portage across Mavis Grind.

The crew of a boat once had to throw a massive box of fish livers overboard to calm the sea so that they could get past a baa [submerged rock]. They had come 30 or 40 miles and were presented with this danger when they were almost ashore. This was an old Fetlar tradition.

The crew of an Esha Ness fishing boat blown off-course to Unst got home by hauling the boat across Mavis Grind and sailing up the west side.
