Summary

Two anecdotes about talking in Shetland dialect.

A lintel was being put up on a door in Unst and Charlie Sandison questioned the stability of the scaffolding. The foreman explained how they would wind the ropes and take them across, and everything would fall into place.

A certain ship's captain from Shetland refused to have Shetland men in his crew. A Shetlander gave his address as Liverpool and sailed with him, but the Shetlander gave himself away when he was sent to find out what was blocking a sail, and called an instruction to belay "thy" sheave.
