Summary

Description of Francis Markiss, the musician.

Hamish Henderson asks about a woman supposed to be a witch, and whether she could make peats fly through the house by themselves. Charles 'Codlins' Simpson tells him that he would have to go to Francis Markiss' clan for that. Francie was a crofter at the Hill of Fisherie, and "the biggest oddity o mankind". He was a strongman and a fine musician, but his morals were corrupt. He was a glutton, and lazy, but he could play the fiddle, and he was the first in Scotland to have Irish bagpipes. He was terribly superstitious.
