Summary

A trick is played on Francie Markiss.

One time Francie Markiss was returning from Brandon Fair and some of the billies [lads] decided to give him a scare. They put a string across the road with a white cloth on it. The Wonderful Boy was with him. Francie called out to him to take to his heels and they ran all the way home to his sister Jean.

She had a daughter known as the Heel Wedge [thick heel slice of a loaf]. Jean's son, the Wonderful Boy, and Francie were both great musicians. They lived off the croft. Charles 'Codlins' Simpson's mother had a pie-shop opposite the Plough Inn and Francie would have eaten all the broken pies and mealie puddings [a kind of sausage made with oatmeal] that she would have given him.
