Summary
Description of Francie Markiss and his character.
Francie Markiss used to travel using two staffs: he could go faster than a horse. He went into Turriff once to fee [engage as a farmservant] for the harvest. He wasn't very good at driving horses, but he said that he was a great holder-up: he could fairly hold the ricks up. That is, he could tell the men when they were going squint, and could smooth down the loose corn. He was lazy.
