Summary
Pipe Major John MacDonald and his pupils.
The contributor studied under Pipe Major John MacDonald for six months in 1912. There were four in the class: Willie Taylor, Seaforths; Willie Young, HLI; Davie Duncan, Royal Scots Fusiliers; and the contributor. The pupils went in to be taught one at a time. If MacDonald was pleased with a pupil's work at the pibroch he would sit with his head in his hands and his eyes closed, but sometimes he would open his eyes and point out the rhythm distinctly. A pupil going in would ask the one coming out, "How is he?" and if the teacher was in a good mood the one coming out would reply, "Sleepin like a babe." Willie Ross took over the piping school after John MacDonald.
