Beairteas a Bharrachd
Beairteas a Bharrachd initially started in 2018 as a pilot study funded by Bòrd na Gàidhlig in which Tobar an Dualchais and Faclair na Gàidhlig worked together to investigate how lexicographers might use Gaelic recordings available on the TAD website in the new Gaelic dictionary which Faclair na Gàidhlig is currently developing.
The study demonstrated that the optimum way to achieve this outcome would be to transcribe recordings so that they would be fully searchable by Faclair na Gàidhlig’s lexicographers. The transcriptions were undertaken by TAD staff and allowed culturally significant content words such as nouns and verbs to be captured and, equally importantly, it allowed access to idiomatic constructions and the different usages of words.
Since completion of the pilot study, funding was awarded from Bord na Gàidhlig’s Collaboration and Covid Recovery Funds to continue with this valuable work. A second phase has now been completed and the collaborative project has been successful in obtaining funding for a third phase.
So far 136,600 words have been transcribed and fed into Faclair na Gàidhlig’s corpus. These transcriptions are all available on this website.
Faclair na Gàidhlig is scheduled to begin publication online in spring 2022.
