Elder and rowan as protection against the evil eye.
There is a great belief in the evil eye. All the old steadings had an elder tree growing beside them [Donald Munro mentions some examples], and all the old houses had a rowan, if it would grow, to prevent the evil eye. The rowan won't grow in sight of the sea, but in that case a piece of rowan was used under the thatch.
