Summary

Halloween was held on the old date in Killin; there was a bonfire and guisers and mischief.

Before 1914 Halloween was held on 11th November in Killin. This was the old heathen date. They gathered timber in the woods for weeks then built a bonfire on Carn na Bonnach. There was horseplay and mischief at night. The boys turned their jackets inside out. Guisers went round the houses singing the rhyme 'Here Come I Galoshin' and were given money or scones or other food. The older children did a lot of mischief, taking things from gardens, moving gates and the dry privies at the backs of the cottages. Girls did things to find out whom they would marry.
