Summary

Christmas Day was not kept; shinty was played on New Year's Day.

Christmas Day was not kept when the contributor was young. In his father's time shinty was played on the machair on New Year's Day, six players to a side. Sometimes there was fighting at the shinty. An old man in the village who was looked up to as being very good would come and bless the players and warn them to behave themselves. This man's name was MacDonald, and the contributor's father was in his house when he died. Strange music was heard. When the minister John Gregorson Campbell heard about this he said the music was the sound of angels coming for the old man's soul.
