Summary
Clark family history - Arran.
The contributor was born in Arran. He came from a family of blacksmiths. His grandfather came from Luing; Breadalbane was offered more rent from another blacksmith and his grandfather refused to match it. He moved to Tarbert. Arran men persuaded him to go to Lochranza and start a smithy. He married a Lochranza woman.
John Clark, a blacksmith, was persecuted by dragoons and went to an island on the west coast. The contributor thinks this is his ancestor and the first person to settle in Luing. His mother was from Sleat, Skye. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather were also called Neil. Gaelic was the only language of his father's generation; little English was used then.
