Alan MacRury, or Ailean a' Mhàgain, promised himself to the devil when he died if he could be rid of a toad that was following him. When the time came Raghnall mac Ailein Òig and Iain Garbh mac Gille Chaluim came to watch over him. Having asked his uncle, Iain Garbh, which shift he wanted to take Raghnall watched over the body first while Iain Garbh slept. At around midnight there was a terrible scream and the corpse rose from the bier. Raghnall grabbed it and kicked Iain Garbh to wake him. They put the old man back in bed. Later they saw an apparition out on the headland. It screamed and jumped into the Sound of Rum.
