Summary

Sorley MacLean's poetry: environment, religion, and tragedy.

The poet Sorley MacLean describes his relationship with the physical environments of Raasay, Skye, and the Highlands as a whole. He is very much affected by physical beauty, especially that of Raasay, with its great geological variety and its spectacular coastline and views. He says that he came to maturity "at the time of the great symbolist movement of European poetry". He describes the symbolism of the Cuillins with that of the woods of Raasay. Some of his poetry coincided with personal tragedy and terrible European tragedy. He says that his religious background predisposes him towards pessimism.
