Summary

Biographical details of Gladys Simpson; description of Fastern Een customs.

Gladys Simpson and her husband, both originally from Keith, have lived at Ardvasar for forty years. Mrs Simpson describes how Fastern Een, called 'Brose and Bannock Day' by her mother, was marked in Keith when she was a child. The terms 'Shrove Tuesday' and 'Pancake Tuesday' are unknown, and Lent is not kept by Presbyterians. Mrs Simpson describes how the brose and bannocks were made and lists the ingredients. The brose was eaten at midday, the bannocks either then or at tea time. Mr Simpson's family had smaller, simpler bannocks.
