Summary

Playing the fiddle at Yule celebrations.

Tom Anderson speaks about playing at dances in winter time and expecially Yule, which was 6 January. New Christmas meant nothing to anyone except the minister. When he was fifteen, in 1926, Tom took a bike to North Roe to play at the Yule dance. He played till half past five in the morning, cycled back to Eshaness, had an hour's sleep then started playing for the Yule visitors. This went on all night again and he got £1.

Item Notes

Old Yule was the date of Christmas in the Julian calendar, which continued to be used for traditional festivals long after it was replaced by the Gregorian calendar in the middle of the 18th century.
