Summary
In this ballad, two boys named Donald and John decide to have a wrestling contest on their way home from school, during which John is accidentally wounded by Donald's knife. Despite his best efforts, Donald is unable to save the life of his dying sibling, and John leaves instructions for his burial.
Stanley Robertson considers this song to be a preamble to his version of 'My Son David', and explains the continuity of the narrative between the two songs.
