Summary

Crop rotation in Colonsay.

Barley was grown in Colonsay before the contributor's time which was sent to Islay distilleries. Not much rye was planted; a little was grown where the soil was sandy. They grew oats. Crofters worked a five-year rotation, alternating between oats or flax, potatoes and turnip, and ryegrass. Animal dung and seaweed was used as fertiliser.
